Zhuhai International Convention Centre Phase 1
Zhuhai, China
The new Zhuhai International Convention and Exhibition Centre forms the first phase of the Shizimen Central Business District and was inaugurated in October 2014. The development is strategically located along the Zhuhai waterfront, maximising close proximity to Hong Kong and Macau and catalysing economic development of the wider Hengqin region in Southern China.
The Zhuhai International Convention and Exhibition Centre comprises 690,000sqm of accommodation upon completion of all phases. The first of the three phases combines world class, flexible exhibition and convention space together with a theatre and music auditoriums. With its distinctive coastal setting and extensive hospitality (St. Regis Hotel, Sheraton Hotel, and serviced apartments), Shizimen offers a compelling platform for businesses and communication.

The principle design is an urban ribbon, which is created to combine the public and civic functions across the site.
Symbolically the ribbon is reflective of the unique sculptural forms created by the weathering of the Zhuhai coastline by the sea. The ribbon's undulating form acts as both a gateway to the development and between the city and the waterfront. The ribbon wraps up and over the elevated drop off plaza to provide framed views to the waterfront and Macau.
The ribbon houses a series of public functions, such as restaurants, retail, and cultural facilities that activate the main plaza and connects pedestrian movement between the main road to the waterfront.

The 330m super high rise tower, which accommodates both St. Regis Hotel and Grade A office space, acts as a visual beacon addressing the Macau Tower and the future super high-rise of the Hengqin region on the opposite shore.
Gordon Affleck was responsible for the original concept and led the design team from inception at competition stage through to detail design whilst working as International Design Principal at RMJM. Soon after Gordon and his fellow partners founded 10 Design, Huafa Group appointed 10 Design to provide design consultancy on the façade design of the iconic tower ensuring the design intent was fully realised. During the construction stage, Huafa Group has continued to seek professional design guidance from Gordon, Miriam Auyeung, and the original concept team on design issues for Phase 1. Subsequent to the commercial success of Phase 1, 10 Design has been commissioned as Lead Architect for Phase 2 and 3 of the convention facility.
