The Island Bridge
The proposed 140m span bridge connects two major residential districts with a green park across a man-made lake. The brief called for a bridge connection which would allow pedestrians and traffic to separately cross in safety.
10 Design's team took this opportunity to expand this requirement into a romantic idea of mean-dering across and below the bridge, arriving at a man-made island deck. This programmatic driver allows not only the evolution of a very picturesque spatial experience but also a sculpted object resting on the water.
The island provides a resting place allowing a more intimate relationship with the water as people can step off the bridge and walk through the landscaped island to sit by the water's edge. The sculpted structure of the ramp touches the water only at the turning points and appears to skip across the water. The arched spans of the ramp create a series of framed views from the shore line of the island below while allowing pleasure boats to moor with the island shoreline. A feature waterfall at the edge of the ramp provides visual interest from the coastline. It also provides back-ground ambience to reduce the impact of the noise of the vehicular traffic above.
