Sun Yat Sen Cardiovascular Hospital Phase 2 Design Submission
Shenzhen, China
The development of the hospital design is driven through a series of connected needs and influences. Whilst from a planning perspective these flows and programmes are separate and in some cases opposing yet they are very much reliant upon one another to ensure the success and efficiency of the whole. A combination of science and technology with environmental and person centric care and consideration is primary in developing a world class facility.
FLEXIBLE & EFFICIENT SYSTEM
The development of the wards, care centres and research facilities should be designed as efficiently as possible for both construction and lifespan. The building should be developed as a system that is constructed and functions as economically and methodically as possible yet operates from a framework that provides for future flexibility and reorganisation where possible.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
Environmental systems should be developed at the design stages to allow the hospital to fulfil obligations to the community through reduced running costs to the public purse, construction systems that promote less embodied energy, quality daylighting, energy efficiency, and reduced construction timescales and inconvenience to the local population.
A CENTRE FOR EDUCATION, RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
The research and development centre will become central to the identity of the hospital as a leading academic research centre. Despite the strict confines of the site and servicing requirements we have organised a flexible plan that provides adequate laboratory conditions with a balance of social areas and collaborative spaces to allow the important co-existence of doctors and scientists across disciplines and specialities.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
The hospital should be positioned as a good neighbour providing the gateway to the hospital phases 1 & 3 and take advantage by positioning itself as a ‘window on the world’ of the research and development that occurs in the R&D centre to highlight how the intelligence and innovations are being redeployed back in to the community.
CARE
As a supplement to human care from medical staff intelligent care systems should be employed in the building to ensure the maximum care for patients and the maximum utilisation of staff and specialists. Systems such digital wayfinding and patient details, virtual bedrails to reduce nurse movement, and considered lighting and acoustic systems are simple yet effeve ways to ensure rest which is a primary source of recovery for patients.
PROTECTION
Our aim is to design a high quality healthcare facility that focuses on the patients, researchers, users and the community in an efficient yet welcoming sustainable environment. The lower podium level should create a protective and welcoming community lobby allowing clear orientation and exhibiting the experience and expertise of the hospital that is developing systems to ensure innovation and excellence in patient care. The successful education of the community is a further means to ensure people learn and protect their own health.
