Museum of Art
Zhuhai has changed from a fishing village to a prosperous contemporary garden-city in a prestigious coastal location. The city is one of the first state level ecological model cities, leading the country in environmental protection while maintaining sustainable and rapid economic development. The municipal government has prioritised city planning and environmental protection.
The brief was to create a new landmark art museum on Zhuhai's waterfront.
The museum is a civic monument and also a public amenity designed in sculpted architectural form to construct a dynamic and stimulating environment in order to encourage discourse and exchange of ideas with the public.
The processional staircase ends in an activated public terrace that encourages public interaction with the museum with visitors who are not using the building. A clear linear route provides a series of experiences and views, both internal and external. Public and semi-public facilities interconnect but are clearly separated. Private areas such as the collection and exhibition preparation areas are separated from unlimited public access.
Three elevated decks interact with the external boulevard staircase. The first is a contemplative reflection pool that is also viewed from the permanent exhibition halls. The second is a waterfront amphitheatre that is semi covered providing an external educational area which extends the convention room and café facilities. The third is an elevated plaza that provides views of both Macau and Zhuhai. This deck is large enough for open air events and is also permanently activated by restaurants.
